Where to eat and drink

You are spoilt for choice in Newport for places to eat and drink!

On Market Street, The Canteen does fantastic pizzas (you can get the pizzas to take away) as well as serving a late breakfast, Blas at Fronlas (Blas means taste in Welsh) and Tides Kitchen & Wine Bar do great breakfasts and freshly cooked quiches, salads, soups and sandwiches as well as other daily specials. Tides is also open Thursday-Saturday evenings serving excellent fish and seafood.

On East Street, Pwnc, is a little gem serving delicious home made food with an ice cream shop at the front. Further down the bottom of East Street, Llys Meddyg champions foraged ingredients from local shores, hedgerows and their own kitchen garden alongside seasonal fresh ingredients from local producers (they also smoke their own salmon) served in their beautiful garden. Further afield, Morawelon down at the Parrog serves coffee and cake and a varied takeaway menu during the day closing at 4.30pm.

Three of the four pubs (The Castle and The Royal Oak on Bridge Street and The Golden Lion on East Street) do pub food with the Royal Oak also offering curry. The fourth pub, The Llywngwair Arms, is a drinking pub with a sports bar.

The Golden Lion has a great cosy, relaxed atmosphere with lovely open fire on cold nights. It gets very busy in the early evening particularly during peak season so you may need to book. You can eat in the bar/covered beer garden (same menu) if you can find a table. Alternatively you can eat in the restaurant make sure you book during peak seasons. They often have music on Saturday nights.

Recently reopened and now run by the owners of Llys Meddyg, The Sailors’ Safety at Pwllgwaelod, which is a lovely cove near Dinas, is a magical place to eat, especially as the sun goes down over the Irish Sea, and the food is delicious.

Cat Rock Café at the Golf Club offers spectacular views overlooking the bay. It is open everyday from 9am serving brunch until 11.30am (Sundays 10.30am) lunch 12-4pm (Sundays 12-3pm). The bar stays open until 9pm.

Newport Boat Club is a great place to watch the sun go down over the Irish Sea. The Commodore’s Lounge bar is open to non-members every evening during the summer season from 4.30pm. There is usually a food truck and ice cream van there during the summer.

You can get great takeaway fish and chips from Môr Fres (Fresh Sea in English) chip shop in Dinas Cross. Drive out of Newport towards Fishguard for about 5 minutes. Just after you have come in to Dinas, Môr Fres is on the left hand side next to the Freemason’s Arms. It’s open Tuesday-Saturday 5-8.30pm.

Though rather pricey, we can thoroughly recommend the 4 AA Rosette Fernery Restaurant at The Grove Hotel in Narberth for truly excellent food.

Something to note: a number of places are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays and most places stop serving between 8.30-9pm.
